Lasting Significance

GoM 7.11.22

God on Monday
Read previous

“As for these things that you see, the days will come when not one stone will be left upon another; all will be thrown down.” (Luke 21:6)

Reflection

What exactly are we doing here? Are we building something of substance through our daily round of action, words, time, and resources? Can we stand back at the end of each day and say, ‘that was worth all this input’?

In today’s reading, Jesus’ disciples are revelling in beauty - the sight of the temple in Jerusalem. They are proud and delighted at seeing this jewel in their crown, this icon of their worshiping life and their community identity.

It is a familiar feeling for me – working in Canterbury, I often find myself taken aback at the beauty, scale and craftsmanship of the Cathedral as I walk through its precincts. It gives me a sense of pride to call this place my ‘office’.

Jesus’ friends are understandably taken aback when he speaks of the transience of this monument and foretells its imminent destruction. Years of blood, sweat, tears, careful design, skills and craftmanship – all for nothing. What a waste, what a shame.

This passage is a challenge to us, too. It confronts us with questions of purpose and value. What are we building with our time and expertise?

Jesus is calling us to zoom out, see the bigger picture, and consider what we might do with the gifts he has given us. How might we ensure that the use to which we put these gifts will stand the tests of time - and reap eternal outcomes?

Response

What will you build this week? Spend a few moments considering how you are going to invest your time, energy, and passions. You do not need the full blueprint for eternally significant work right now. You just need to start laying one or two bricks.

Prayer

God of the bigger picture, thank you for calling us to partner with you in the building of your eternal kingdom. Align our vision with yours. Stoke our passions that, by your grace, we may honour you in all our striving. Amen.

Next Steps

Look through your diary this week – where might there be opportunities to help build something truly meaningful?
